Why you need a Nursing Bra

Posted on: June 30, 2011

A nursing bra is designed for women while breastfeeding. It not only makes life easier for women, but also can be healthier. To ensure the best performance, make sure the bra fits properly.

A nursing bra has unique features that are useful during breastfeeding. First, the cups detach easily from the straps. Most designs allow for easy release with a single hand and easy reattachment as well. They also have spots to place breastfeeding pads, which many women wear to prevent leakage.

The bra must fit properly to get the best results. If it is too loose, it will not provide the support needed. The breasts are heavier and larger during feeding, so proper support is needed. If the bra is too tight, it may block the milk ducts. Blocked milk ducts not only inhibit production of milk, but also may get infected, leading to mastisis.

Most women do not like underwire bras. If possible these should be avoided, especially very shortly after birth.

While breastfeeding, the size and shape of the breasts changes, not only over time, but throughout the day. A proper breastfeeding or nursing bra can be adjusted at the cup and strap level.

You should try to have at least 3-4 nursing bras to wear throughout breastfeeding. They will not only make you more comfortable, but feel better and make your life much easier, especially if you choose to breastfeed in public.
